Choose a company
Pick the company you work in after sign-in, set up your first company, and switch companies inside Winlium.
A company is one set of books in Winlium. Every document you create belongs to one company. You work in one company at a time. This page covers three things: choosing a company after sign-in, setting up your first company, and switching companies later.
Choose a company after sign-in
You see the Choose a company page only if both of these are true.
- You belong to more than one company.
- Winlium does not remember the last company you used.
If you belong to one company, Winlium opens it without asking. If Winlium remembers your last company, it opens that one.

Set up your first company
The first-company screen is for the first administrator of a new workspace. You arrive here straight after accepting a workspace invite. While your workspace has no company, every screen sends you back here until you finish.

What Winlium creates for you
When you select Let's go, Winlium sets up the company in the background.
- The company record, with the name, currency and email you typed.
- Module access, based on the modules your licence includes.
- You as a member of the company, so you can open it.
- A Financial Year for the current calendar year, from 01 January to 31 December, with 12 monthly periods. See Financial years and periods.
- A default Chart of Accounts.
- Default Accounting Settings, pointing at the default cash, receivable and payable accounts.
- Default compliance obligation types: VAT, WHT, PAYE, Pension and NHF. See WHT and VAT.
Winlium does these extra steps one by one. If one fails, the company still opens, and that item is missing. Check Financial Year and Charts of Accounts under Accounting, then Configuration, and add anything that is missing.

- 1Open the company dropdown.
- 2Select the company you want.
Open the dropdown
Select the company name at the top right.Pick a company
Select the company you want. The first line, Select a Company, is only a prompt. It does nothing.Check the page
Winlium reloads the data on your screen for the new company. You stay on the same page.
What to know:
- Your choice is saved. The next time you sign in, Winlium opens that company.
- If the page has unsaved changes, Winlium asks first. The popup is Discard unsaved changes?. It says "You have unsaved changes on this page. Switching companies will take you away from this page and discard them." Select Switch company to go ahead, or Stay here to keep working. If you go ahead, Winlium opens the list page for that screen.
- If you have Winlium open in more than one browser tab, a switch in one tab refreshes the others. A tab with unsaved changes shows "Active company changed in another tab — unsaved changes on this page were discarded." and moves to the list page.
- You can only switch to a company you belong to. An administrator adds you to companies. See Roles, permissions and module restriction.
- If the switch fails, Winlium shows "Failed to switch company".
- Your menu may change after a switch. Each company can turn modules on and off, and your roles can differ by company.
